A speaker who explained the science behind coffee on Tuesday said the drink has three stages of flavor development.

Students tasted the three stages: strong, medium and weak.

A strong coffee, speaker Alex Angelelli said, has an acidic and fruity taste whereas a medium brew is sweet. A weak brew is bitter, he added.

“Coffee is pretty interesting,” Angelelli said. “I want people to be able to leave [my presentation] with some things they can tell their friends.”

“I thought this event was very exciting,” fifth-year nursing student Brittany Dunne said.

Dunne added it was interesting to see something she’s learning in her chemistry class applied to everyday life.

Angelelli said that brewing coffee is a straight-forward experiment students can perform everyday by changing the ratio of water to coffee grounds.

First-year earth science student Emily O’Donnell said she really liked the event.
