On March 11, the Student Government Association will be holding an Oxfam Hunger Banquet to help raise awareness and funds for the global hunger.

“The Oxfam Hunger Banquet is to [help] raise awareness about human rights and global hunger disparities,” said Amaris Cyrus, a senator of the Student Government Association and an early children education major.

Oxfam America is a global organization that works to help, “lasting solutions to poverty, hunger and social injustice,” according to Oxford America’s website.

Taking place in the dining hall in the SUN building, at the beginning of the hunger banquet, attendees will be assigned to different income levels.

“If you’re in the lower income, you have to sit on the floor and you can only eat rice and beans,” said Leslie Cook, student engagement specialist. “If you’re in a middle income, you get to sit up a little higher and you get rice and beans. And if you’re in the higher income level, you get to sit at a normal table, you get silverware and a full course meal.”

A dialogue will be started after the dinner between the facilitator, James Felton, AACC’s chief diversity officer and the attendees.

As someone who has been to a few Oxfam Hunger Banquets held by former students, Cook understands the impact that it can have on its attendees.

“It brings up a lot of emotions for some students who have lived through various income levels,” she said. “It’s really neat and it’s really eye opening too for some people if they didn’t know the different facts about it.”

The organizers of the event will be accepting donations for Oxfam America however, they are not accepting canned goods or dried boxes of food.

“We will be accepting monetary donations and we will also have a laptop set up where participants can donate directly to Oxfam America,” said Chris Storck, director of student engagement.

The hunger banquet will be held on March 11 at 6 p.m. in the SUN dining hall. To attend, register in SUN 202.
