The trial date for a 21-year-old Churchton resident, who faces 10 charges relating to the death of a former AACC lacrosse player last summer, was set for July 11 at a hearing on Friday at the Circuit Court for Anne Arundel County.

Shayne Kenneth Smith, who entered a plea of not guilty in February, faces three felony charges, including negligent manslaughter and homicide by vehicle, in the death of Nick Barton last June

Barton died in an accident on the West River near Parish Creek Marina when the boat he was riding in hit a support structure, throwing him into the water. Five others were in the boat when it crashed, according to natural resources police.

Smith also faces misdemeanor charges connected with operating the boat under the influence or operating the boat recklessly.

He could see a sentence of up to 25 years in prison for his part in the crash.
