Anne Arundel Community College has been named to the Military Friendly
School® list for the sixth consecutive year by Victory Media, a veteran-owned business
that helps military personnel transitioning into civilian life.

The Military Friendly list honors the top 20 percent U.S. colleges, universities and
trade schools that are helping American veterans to succeed with their educational goals.
This year, AACC was granted with this award because it demonstrated exceptional
commitment as far as advocating for student veterans on campus and in their careers.

“The school is really good about providing a lot of financial aid for veterans. A lot
of schools don’t have a Veterans Resource Center, a lot of schools don’t have a Student
Veterans Association but AACC has that,” said Kathleen Wood, an employee at AACC’s
Military and Veterans Resource Center.

The Military and Veterans Resource Center at AACC is a place where veterans
can obtain additional information or resources about attending college. In here, members
can also gather informally to form new friendships and speak with the veterans’
counselor, Fola Kayode.

“She [Kayode] counsels veterans who are OEF/IEF specifically and usually goes
on campus twice a week to help out veterans if need be,” Wood said.

“We have also another person who comes in to help veterans find jobs; her name
is Tanya Johnson Spradley”, she continues, “we just try to do whatever we can
sometimes here with job offers and how veterans can seek help if they suffer from
PTSD.”

The Veterans Student Association is a national club intended for veterans who
want to help each other with the transition into the civilian and student life. The club also
offers an opportunity for them to reach out and help their communities. “Last year they
did a clothing drive, had a raffle and did various projects”, said Wood “and they also do
Veteran’s Day events.”

“There are approximately 1000 veterans attending Anne Arundel Community
College,” Wood said. “And we just try to help them whenever we can”.
