Students can find free, more affordable textbooks

College students spend an average of $579 a year on textbooks from campus bookstores, according to the National Association of College Stores. Here are some ways to save money on your textbooks, and in some cases, get them for free. 

  • Shop around and look at all the options for buying textbooks. 
  • Get used textbooks from the bookstore at 25 percent off. 
  • Buy electronic versions of textbooks and look for open source books for free. 
  • Rent textbooks from the bookstore 
  • Ask about the bookstore’s Amazon price match. 
  • Look at textbooks in the library for free. 
  • Check out rental and buying prices on chegg.com. 
  • Sell your textbooks back to the bookstore.
