AACC students picked up free fruits and vegetables and learned about good sleep habits at a wellness event on Oct. 1 at the Health and Life Sciences Building.
The campus Health & Wellness Center and the Office of Student Engagement put out a table of assorted fruits and vegetables for students to take home and goodie bags of eye masks and sleep logs to track sleep.
“I would say that it gets more access to fresh fruits and vegetables,” Bethany Tatro, AACC’s basic needs coordinator, said. “Not everybody can afford them, and it also just brings it to the forefront for even the people that can, because you may not have brought yourself a snack today, but now you have.”
The Wellness Wednesday event is on the first Wednesday of each month. This month’s event drew approximately 50 students, faculty and staff.
“I participate every time that I can, just because I appreciate … just being able to be provided with healthy foods that I can take home, said Hallie Zlokovitz, a third-year nursing student, said. “So when they have this station out … if someone who really needs it, it’s easier for them to kind of partake in it.”
Students who visited the tables called the event “really fun” and “something to look forward to.”
“I did it last month and I really liked it,” Allie Hunt, a first-year theater student, said. “I got a reusable bag, which I brought this month. Going to get some carrots to make a snack after school. “I think it’s really fun, that they like, supply us with pretty vegetables … because produce is really expensive now.”
Others agreed.
“I just saw everybody coming over here, and I saw tea, and I’m really into tea,” Ja’Naiya Stoakley, a first-year radiology student, said. “Food and drinks … usually bring a lot of people together. Us college students, it’s really stressful at times, so we need something to look forward to and hold on to.”
The next Wellness Wednesday will be Nov. 5 on the HLSB patio. The wellness theme for November will be movement, according to Shawn Grim of the Health & Wellness Center.
